How It Works

Decibel scales in audio: dBu references 0.7746 Vrms (the voltage that produces 1 mW across 600Ω). dBV references 1.0 Vrms. dBFS is the digital scale where 0 dBFS = maximum. Professional line level is +4 dBu (1.228 Vrms), consumer is -10 dBV (0.316 Vrms) — a 11.79 dB difference. The relationship: dBu = dBV + 2.21. Most pro converters set 0 dBFS = +18 to +24 dBu for headroom. Power: dBm references 1 mW, with P = V²/Z.
