How It Works

Speaker arrays increase SPL and control coverage. Incoherent summation: +10·log10(n) dB (doubling speakers adds 3 dB). Coherent (line array): up to +20·log10(n) dB in the near field. Critical rule: center-to-center spacing must be less than λ/2 at the highest frequency to avoid destructive comb filtering. A 30cm box works coherently up to ~5,700 Hz. Splay angles control vertical coverage — less splay = tighter throw, more distance. The near field extends to L²/(4λ) where L is array length.
